Although some molds are found year round - especially indoors, there are periods of the year when the concentrations and resulting health problems from these molds are much higher. Usually molds will have seasonal periods in the autumn and in the summer months. Spring can be bad for pollens but usually for molds and fungi April , May and early June are usually mold free seasonal time periods. However spring flooding can change all of that. The summer periods of July and August can or cannot be relatively mold free. It all depends if the summer periods are wet and humid.
In most years - if you find that your health concerns are minimal and you feel better and healthier overall in April . May and early June and in the time periods of August and September - suspect mold allergy and allergies as your health issues and concerns.
Of course there can often be significant daily and regional variations to these patterns according to specific conditions that can cause mold levels to fluctuate widely. This can happen by month, day or even hour. A sudden high dew, a change in pressure , wind or temperature can cause a local explosion of spores.
Chemical pollution combines with fog can aggrevate mold sensitivity, the damp cloud holds down mold particles which could otherwise escape higher and into the upper atmospheres.

What situations trigger spore release in concentrations ? Usually it is some change in the environment. Sudden warming in a damp environment can stimulate spore release in an indoor environment, Using a tumble clothes dryer ( either gas or electric) , drying wet towels or hanging wet laundry near a strong heat source will stimulate spore production. Bringing damp logs or a plant from the cold will also produce mould spores. Installing central heating in an older house can bring about sudden concentrations of spores where there really were no spore or health problems previously. A damp spot beneath a dripping radiator or sink can induce high levels of mould as the heating comes on - especially after the summer / late fall time period as winter sets in and the home heating is employed. Keeping rooms dry and keeping a steady average temperature can do much to avoid such problems.
Climatic conditions can also stimulate spore release. A warm humid period of weather in summer will encourage mould production in foilage , crops and plants. If there is a windy period , the spores can be dispersed and carried relatively long distances . Some molds implicated in allergy problems are “Cladosporium. Altermaria, Bortrytis, Cineria and Stremphyllium - produce spores much more rapidly in a drying wind. They can produce explosive concentrations of spores on hot dry , days in summertime.

Ionizers work by producing negative ions. Dust and other particles have both a positive and negative charges and are often suspended in the air. The negative ions from the ionizer neutralize the positive charge and the particles from the air are attracted to the wall and floor. The air is thus cleaned and cleared of particles being attracted to other surfaces, not by them being filtered or removed. Ionizers do not remove chemical fumes or chemical or solvent vapours.
Studies carried out on the effectiveness of ionizers in reducing the levels of airborne allergens have failed to produce any evidence that they actually can help allergic respiratory problems and symptoms. However people who use them often do insist that they bring benefits.
One major drawback of ionizers is that dirt clings to walls behind furniture and around edges of furniture and objects. The dirt is often greasy and difficult to clean , thus resulting in permanent black marks, for which the only solution is to redecorate - with serious health implications to some as a result of the paint and solvent fumes.

Air Purifiers
Air purifiers are available in the retail and health market in a widespead and very easy to obtain in the retail trade. These are generally small electrical devices that are relatively cheap . Air purifiers work by drawing the air and passing it through a thin fabric filter. Sometimes these products are called fragrancers or vaporizers. Their main function is to mask smells and odors. However they are not very effective at removing particles or vapors. Thus they are generally of little benefit to people with allergies or sensitivity. In addition the fragrances can upset the chemically sensitive.

In general there are several types of air clearing and air filtering devices
The devices fall into three broad categories
1) Air purifiers
2) Ionisers
3) Air filters and cleaners
- In addition to these three types there are also built in and radiator type air cleaning systems available on the market

1) Air filters and ionizers can be very helpful after decorating or building works have been done and completed , to clean chemical fumes more rapidly and clearly
2) Cooker hoods - extraction devices fitted over cookers - usually contain a layer of activated charcoal. The active ingredient - the activated charcoal component can be very helpful in removing fumes from the kitchen areas

Whichever device you choose it is most important to change and clean filters and accessories as often as the manufacturer recommends. This will keep the performance of the device high and proper. It is best to keep windows and doors closed while the filter is running. Remember to ventilate and air regularly when the filter is off.
If you are exceptionally sensitive , you may notice particles or chemical traces on the filter media before the time duration that the manufacturer suggests for cleaning or change. If this happens , then change, wash or vacuum the filter as soon as you begin to notice anything.
If you have used a device in particularly heavy atmosphere - say in a room or house that previously was employed by tobacco smokers, or you use the device in a very intensive manner , then change wash , or clean the filter parts straightaway to remove the traces.
Even the strongest and most effective of the filters will not instantly remove fumes or chemical vapours when they arise.. If someone smokes in the room when the filter is on. For example this will not prevent the smoke affecting you, but the filter should clear the fumes quickly and help prevent residues from clinging to the surface.
