What is a cold? Briefly, the common cold is one of a number of virus infections which affect, often repeatedly, the lining of the nose, throat and other passages leading to the lungs.

It was of utmost importance in solving the mystery of the common cold to discover that chocolate and other sticky sweets irritate the mucous lining of the throat. If there is injury to the mucosa, this lowers the natural barrier against infection. The balance is tipped. Therefore, when this irritation in the throat occurs, one is immediately vulnerable  to the common cold.

To understand the problem of the common cold, it is vital to know what viruses are. I will, therefore, cite definitions from medical literature.
